How to Plan a Large Outdoor Fountain

Scale: Stand at the main viewing spot, such as the front door or the street, and mark the fountain's footprint and height on the ground. A fountain that looks huge in a photo often looks right on an open lawn. Our guide on how to choose the right fountain size walks through it.
Base: Large cast stone fountains can weigh well over 1,000 pounds, so most sit on a poured concrete pad. Plan the pad size and depth before delivery.
Pool or basin: Many estate fountains sit in a wide basin or pool, some up to 16 feet across. The pool sets the footprint, so measure for it first.
Power and water: Plan for a dedicated outdoor GFCI circuit near the fountain. Some fountains can also connect to an auto-fill valve, which keeps the water level steady.
Delivery and setup: Large fountains arrive by freight on pallets, in several sections. Plan for equipment to lift the heaviest sections into place.
Lead time: Lead times vary by model and finish and can run longer for the largest pieces. We confirm the current timing before you order.

Large Fountain FAQs

What counts as a large or extra large outdoor fountain?

There is no set rule. We call a fountain large when it stands about 5 feet or taller. We call it extra large, or estate size, when it adds a third or fourth tier, a wide pool, or a height of 7 feet or more.

How much does a large outdoor fountain weigh?

It depends on the model. Large cast stone fountains can weigh well over 1,000 pounds with the basin, and the biggest estate pieces weigh much more. We confirm the weight of your model before delivery, so you can plan the base and the equipment.

Do large fountains need a permit?

Some cities, HOAs and commercial sites require approval for large water features, electrical work or pools. Check with your local building office or HOA before you order.

Can a large fountain stay outside in winter?
